‘I had to learn to treat my career like a sporting activity: to focus on my own journey and not look to the left or the right, because my path looked very different from everyone else’s around me. There were times when I needed to find the confidence to speak up, when opportunities didn’t fit but led to others, and times when I had to be patient and think outside the box.”

Young mother, woman in STEM, and BBC Weather, nature and science presenter Sophia Herod has an inspiring story to tell. Having built her career while raising three young children, she has combined a resilient mindset with hard work and determination. Sophia has had a lifelong fascination with nature and science. From a young age, she made conscious decisions to forge a career based on her passions and skills and went on to study BSc Natural Hazards at University. One of her main strengths has always been communication, so she wanted to find a job which combined both of her loves. As a woman in STEM, Sophia loves to talk about the subjects that excite her most, in turn inspiring the audiences she engages with.

Sophia is an experienced speaker, having presented at live events, in schools, and for climate organisations supporting young people. She is a podcast host and a weather presenter for the BBC across TV and digital platforms. Her specialist subjects include meteorology, climate, and astronomy, but she also loves to share her personal story. Sophia inspires audiences with anecdotes of overcoming obstacles, learning patience, and finding unique ways to create opportunities. Her personal experience of juggling work with being a mum, alongside carving out her path as a young woman in STEM, working towards the role she holds today, makes for a truly inspiring story.

Sophia is one of those rare types of people that lights up a room with her infectious smile, optimism and ‘can do’ attitude. Her knowledge and passion for science, nature, weather and space shines through in her work and she clearly enjoys inspiring and educating others through her focussed yet fun communication style. She makes complicated scientific information easy to understand with her delivery of fun and interesting facts. She’s a total pleasure to work with as she brings new ideas, different perspectives and fresh approaches to presenting and broadcasting. All delivered with her trademark informative but relaxed style and her endless optimism. Sarah Keith-Lucas – BBC Weather Presenter
I had the absolute pleasure having Sophia co-present with me on the Marlow FM Breakfast Show, and it was immediately clear that she was destined for great things. Her warmth, professionalism, and natural charisma made every broadcast a joy, both for me and for our listeners. Sophia has an incredible ability to connect with people — whether she’s sharing a laugh on air or delivering the latest weather updates with clarity and confidence. Seeing her now as a weather presenter for the BBC is no surprise at all; it’s a well-deserved reflection of her talent, hard work, and genuine passion for broadcasting Tim Ashburner ‘Founder Marlow FM 97.5’
