Steve Smith, Director, Raise the Bar
A conversation with our People Manager recently started with job titles and ended up somewhere more interesting.
We were talking about “Human Resources” as a label. Whether it still fits. Because in a growing number of organisations, the teams managers lead are not made up entirely of people. They include intelligent agents too. Not just running background tasks. Taking on meaningful, complex work.
That changes what management actually requires.
Agents need onboarding too
Here is something that gets overlooked. AI agents do not arrive ready. They need context, boundaries, and clear direction to perform well. Skip that, and the outputs are as inconsistent and misaligned as you would get from any poorly inducted new hire.
The difference is that most organisations have processes for onboarding people. Very few have thought seriously about how to onboard, direct, and manage agents. That gap is where performance gets lost.
What this means for your managers
Leading a mixed workforce, part human and part AI, requires a different set of capabilities. Managers need to understand which tasks are genuinely suited to agents and which require human judgment. They need to know when to intervene and when to let the system run. They need to create accountability and clarity across a team that does not operate on a single set of instincts or motivations.
This is not a technology problem. It is a leadership problem. And it is one that conventional management development has not caught up with yet.
Where Raise the Bar comes in
We work with organisations to build leadership capability that is fit for the way teams actually work now. That includes helping managers develop the skills, thinking, and habits to lead in environments where human and AI performance sit side by side.
The leaders who get ahead of this will not just manage change more effectively. They will shape how their organisations use AI, not just react to it.
If your development is not addressing this yet, it probably should be. We can help.
