Renowned as one of Great Britain’s greatest-ever Olympians, Steve claimed his first Olympic gold medal in the Coxed Four at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. His winning streak continued with gold medals at the 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, firmly placing Steve as the fifth-most successful British Olympian alongside iconic athletes like Dame Laura Kenny and Sir Jason Kenny. Alongside his impressive Olympic medal tally, Steve is a 9x World Rowing Champion, claimed across the Coxed Pair, Coxless Pair and Coxless Four, a 3x Commonwealth Games gold medallist in the Single Sculls, Coxless Pair and Coxed Four, and competed at 19 Henley Royal Regattas. Throughout the greatest successes of his career, Steve continually overcame adversity after he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, type two diabetes and dyslexia – all of which he is a passionate advocate for today.

In 2000, Steve retired, Knighted for Services to Rowing in the New Year Honours and awarded the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001, along with being elected as a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy.  In 2002, his achievement of winning gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games was voted number 1 in Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Sporting Moments, and in 2011, he was recognised with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. Steve has also been a BBC Sports Analyst and Presenter, providing coverage at the 2012 London Olympic Games and various World Championships, and a Patron of the Jaguar Academy of Sport, providing an in-depth understanding of what it takes to compete and succeed at the highest level. In 2024, Steve was added to the bill for the “An Evening With…” series, telling his story. Steve has also been an Ambassador for Gleeds, Step One and Specsavers, and helped to launch a cross-media campaign for Ted’s Health to raise awareness for men’s health.
