Shaun is one of the most successful and decorated coaches in Rugby League, having won every trophy available with Wigan Warriors. He is now Head Coach of England Rugby League.
From as early as he can remember, Shaun Wane’s life has been a series of challenges. As the fifth child of six, he grew up in a volatile household on a tough estate in Wigan and was expelled from High School before he had the chance to gain any academic qualifications.
Shaun channelled his aggression, his physicality and his competitive nature into playing rugby league at the highest level. He was signed to Wigan at the age of 16 and made 149 appearances for the club before spells at Leeds and Workington. He also earned two caps for Great Britain and captained the under 21’s team.
After progressing through the ranks as a coach, he became Head Coach of his hometown club in 2010. Harnessing the wealth of knowledge and experience that he had gained in earlier life, he implemented a strong high-performance culture, which led them to win all of the trophies and accolades available throughout his time as Head Coach:
• 3 times Grand Final Winner and 2 times Grand Finalist
• Challenge Cup Winner and Challenge Cup Finalist
• League Leaders Shield Winner
• Super League Coach of the Year 2018
• World champions 2017
• Achieved the best win ratio of any Super League Coach in its history – second best win ratio in professional world rugby league
Shaun is passionate about developing talent. Out of the 52 debuts he gave during his 7-year tenure as Head Coach, 41 of those were products of the academy system that he helped to build – more than double the previous record. He trained players to not only be better athletes, but also better people in the world. Instilling discipline off the pitch that transcended all areas of their lives.
After leaving his hometown club, Shaun spent just over a year as High Performance Consultant at Scotland Rugby Union, working closely with the academy and youth set up, building a winning culture for the future of Scotland RU. In Feb 2020, Shaun was appointed his dream job as Head Coach of England Rugby League and will be leading the men’s team to the Ashes Series later this year and to the World Cup 2021.
