Melanie Brown, famously known as Mel B or “Scary Spice”, rose to fame in the 1990s as a member of the best‑selling female pop group of all time, the Spice Girls, who sold over 100 million records worldwide. She has also served as a judge on X Factor Australia, Australia’s Got Talent, The Voice Kids, and X Factor UK.
She is a Sunday Times bestselling author for her memoir Brutally Honest (2018), offering a deeply personal account that reveals the truth behind the Spice Girls and her harrowing marriage (2007–2017), which she describes as a decade-long struggle to gain freedom.
Following her experience in a coercive, abusive relationship, Mel B became a patron of Women’s Aid in November 2018. She has given speeches at Women’s Aid events, geatured in a classical music video with Fabio D’Andrea to raise global awareness of domestic abuse, helped establish the Women’s Aid Live Chat service, launched an economic abuse report at 10 Downing Street, discussing her personal financial abuse, hosted a fundraising fashion show with Dame Julie Walters and advised the TV soap Coronation Street on a landmark coercive control storyline.
She continues advocating for survivors and urging that domestic abuse be prioritised in national elections. In the legal sphere, she campaigns for judges to receive domestic abuse training.
Honours & Awards
- Awarded an MBE in May 2022 (New Year Honours) for her commitment to supporting survivors and raising domestic abuse awareness
