Evolving with Purpose: How 20 Years of Learning and Change Led to Leadership Catalyst

7 November 2025

For twenty years, Raise the Bar has been at the forefront of leadership and management apprenticeships. Over that time, the world of work  and learning has changed dramatically. Politically, economically and socially. Expectations of leaders have evolved, funding structures have shifted, and the skills required to lead effectively have grown more complex.

Through every change, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to developing leaders who can think differently, inspire others and deliver meaningful results.

Learning from Two Decades of Change

Since we started back in the early 2000s, the conversation has shifted from competence to capability, from managing to leading, from delivering outcomes to driving transformation.

We’ve seen funding reform and government priorities reshape the management and leadership landscape, most notably through the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy. Meanwhile, social change and workplace evolution have redefined what great leadership looks like, calling for empathy, inclusion, adaptability and data-informed decision making.

Each change has informed how we design and deliver our programmes. We’ve consistently adapted our delivery style and curriculum to reflect regulation and the lived reality of leaders navigating complexity and change.

When funding for the Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship came to an end, we knew our next step had to go beyond replacing what was lost. It needed to reflect everything we’ve learned over two decades of delivering high-impact programmes, being led by global experts and align with where leadership is heading next.

That’s why we partnered with Grant Thornton, one of the UK’s leading professional services firms, to co-design Leadership Catalyst.

Together, we’ve created a fully funded programme that combines Raise the Bar’s award-winning approach to behavioural and experiential learning and our access to incredible experts with Grant Thornton’s commercial insight and strategic expertise.

This collaboration ensures the programme bridges the gap between leadership theory and business reality. Learners gain the tools to lead improvement and change in measurable, commercially relevant ways, connecting people, data and performance across their organisations.

Leadership Catalyst is built around the capabilities modern leaders need most: strategic thinking, continuous improvement, commercial acumen and emotional intelligence. It blends practical improvement methodology with contemporary themes such as inclusion, sustainability and digital transformation.

Steve Smith, Founding Director at Raise the Bar, explains:

“Leadership Catalyst is the result of two decades of learning and collaboration. Every shift in the sector, every piece of feedback from employers and learners, and our partnership with Grant Thornton have all shaped how we design and deliver leadership development today.”

At its core, Leadership Catalyst reflects Raise the Bar’s company values of innovation, collaboration, energy and growth. Every element of the programme has been shaped by these principles, from co-designing the curriculum with employers to embedding dynamic, experiential learning that ignites curiosity and confidence in every participant.

Behind the programme is a dedicated delivery team whose results speak to our passion for creating meaningful learning experiences and our relentless focus on quality, impact and learner success.

The funding landscape may have changed, but our mission has not.

Raise the Bar remains dedicated to helping organisations unlock potential and prepare their leaders for the challenges ahead. Leadership Catalyst is the product of two decades of evolution, partnership and purpose designed to create confident, capable leaders ready to drive meaningful, measurable impact.
