Holly Ellis

Born and raised in Liverpool, Holly attended a state school before pursuing a passion for science at Oxford University. From 2011 to 2014, she completed a BA in Biological Sciences at St. John’s College. Eager to deepen her knowledge, she went on to earn an MSc in Medical Genetics from Chester University in 2016.

That same year, she secured her place on the highly competitive NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Genomics. This three-year training programme equipped her with the expertise to become a Clinical Scientist in the NHS. In 2019, after completing the programme, she also earned an MSc in Clinical Sciences (Genomics) from Manchester University. Since then, she has worked within the NHS, specialising in genetics.

In 2019, Holly launched a YouTube channel and social media presence as “The Scouse Scientist”. Her outreach efforts led to media appearances on local TV, radio, and podcasts, as well as invitations to deliver workshops and educational talks at schools. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she transitioned to online outreach, continuing to engage with students and sharing insights into the work done in the lab.

In 2022, her contributions were recognised when she received the highly commended “NHS Healthcare Science Rising Star” award for her work in public engagement and science communication.

In 2024, Holly stepped into a new role as Principal Clinical Scientist in Genetics and Education & Training Lead. Her promotion allows her to play a pivotal role in training the next generation of scientists within the NHS Scientist Training Programme.

Holly’s dedication to inspiring the next generation remains stronger than ever, guided by the core belief: “If you can see it, you can be it.”

Holly lives in Liverpool with her husband, young daughter and dog.
