Leading the Pack with a Growth Mindset in the Age of AI

Right now, business leaders are grappling with the same questions:

How do we keep pace with AI? How do we use it to fuel performance, not just efficiency? How do we stay ahead when the pace of change is relentless?

That growth mindset is exactly what’s needed in today’s business world especially when it comes to artificial intelligence, and I can’t help but draw experience from my time in elite sport where the toughest place isn’t in the chasing pack. It’s out in front.

When you’re leading there’s no one to copy. No blueprint to follow. You’re exposed. The ones behind you are learning from your every move, cruising in your slipstream. They’re making their next step based on your last one.

To stay ahead you must keep moving, keep evolving. You can’t settle. You must be hungry to learn, brave enough to try, and disciplined enough to keep doing the hard yards when nobody’s watching.

The difference between staying ahead and falling back isn’t about talent it’s about mindset. The most successful athletes I trained alongside weren’t just physically gifted. They were mentally relentless. They embraced uncertainty and viewed every failure as data. Every setback was fuel for the next performance.

AI success is a test of your agility and willingness to lead in a space where there is no slipstream or path to follow.

Innovation is moving fast. If you’re not using AI, in many ways, you’re not even in the race. But using it well takes something more.

It takes commitment to learning and a willingness to fail, adapt, and try again with confidence. The same qualities that define high performance in sport, in business, and in life.

Leading AI innovation is about culture

Businesses using AI to automate and personalise customer experiences, create adaptive learning journeys, drive product innovation, and fuel smarter decision making are truly leading with a growth mindset.

And it’s not necessarily those with the biggest budgets or the flashiest tools. They’re the ones fostering cultures of experimentation and continuous learning in a safe and supportive environment.

They’re the organisations encouraging their people to test, fail, learn, and try again without fear of judgement or perfection. They’re in the arena, not on the sidelines.

And that brings us to the growth mindset required. As leaders, we need to shift our own mindset too.

Are we creating environments where teams feel safe to experiment and innovate? Are we embracing the discomfort that comes with change or protecting ourselves in old ways of thinking? Are we modelling curiosity and resilience in our own behaviour?

This is leadership for the AI era. It’s no longer about having all the answers it’s about building the capability to ask better questions, to collaborate across boundaries, and to evolve continuously.

It’s not easy. That’s the challenge and the opportunity.

While you’re out there testing, failing, learning, and pushing forward, there will always be those in the stands offering their opinions, telling you why it could fail.

But as Theodore Roosevelt famously said:

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles. The credit belongs to the person who is actually in the arena.”

From the arena of elite sport to the boardroom

In sport, that’s exactly where you want to be, in the arena. Testing your limits. Raising the bar.

The same is true in business today. In a world moving at AI speed, mindset will be your most valuable competitive edge.

It’s the leaders and organisations with the courage to step into the arena to test, learn, and evolve who will shape what comes next.

So, ask yourself this: Are you chasing? Or are you leading?
