Professor Graeme Close is Head of the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences (RISES) at Liverpool John Moores University and a world-leading expert in human physiology and sport nutrition.

He combines over two decades of academic research with frontline experience in elite performance environments. Graeme has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and is internationally recognised for translating cutting-edge science into applied performance solutions.

In elite sport, Graeme serves as Discipline Lead for Nutrition for England Rugby, having supported three Rugby World Cups and the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour. He is Head of Nutrition to the DP World Tour and the Ryder Cup, and works closely with professional golfers competing at the highest level of the global game. He also consults to Everton Football Club.

Graeme is one of the few practitioners accredited across sport science, strength and conditioning, and sport nutrition, and is a Fellow of both BASES and the European College of Sport Science (ECSS).

Beyond sport, Graeme is a sought-after international keynote speaker, delivering presentations across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Australasia. His corporate work focuses on translating high-performance principles from elite sport into leadership, resilience, teamwork and sustained excellence in business environments. He has worked with global organisations seeking to apply “paper to podium” thinking to workplace performance.
