Steve Smith: Where is the Learning Environment Moving To?

In the ever-evolving world of learning, it’s important to stay ahead of the curve. So, what can we expect in the coming years? Let’s explore some of the top trending topics in learning and weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of different ways of learning.

Trending Learning Topics

Diversity and inclusion continues to be an incredibly important topic in learning and we only see that accelerating. As we move into challenging economic times, there’s a need to develop skills for managers to lead remote and hybrid teams. Resilience is also a key focus, including how to create resilient managers who can deal with change. Artificial intelligence is going to be huge too, with the launch of some mind-blowing products that will have an impact on the learning environment.

Different Ways of Learning

There’s been a shift back towards face-to-face learning, but online learning is still a popular option. So, what if there was a middle ground? Enter the metaverse, where traditional and online learning can blend together in a completely immersive experience. But let’s first weigh up the pros and cons of each learning option.

Face-to-Face Learning

Traditional face-to-face learning is time-consuming, costly, and not great for the environment or work-life balance. There’s also limited availability of resources and consistency in the quality of training. And of course, physical contact can pose a risk, as we saw with the recent pandemic.

Online Learning

Online learning has become more popular, with platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams providing exponential growth. However, it’s easy to switch off from and can feel two-dimensional, lacking that physical connection. But, it’s accessible and provides the opportunity for bite-sized learning.

The Metaverse

The metaverse is a middle-ground between face-to-face and online learning. It’s completely immersive and feels like face-to-face learning, but without the limitations. Once you have the headset, there’s minimal cost, and the possibilities for creating exciting, infinite environments are endless. It’s an experience that’s tactile, memorable, and supercharges learning.

What works for you and your people?

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to learning, but there’s definitely a space for all three methods. In 2023, a blend of face-to-face, online, and metaverse learning is likely to be the most effective. The metaverse provides a unique opportunity to create incredible, immersive learning experiences that are limited only by our imagination.

So, which learning method will you choose?
