John D Anderson MBE MSc has been the Performance Director and Team Leader of the Olympic and Paralympic Canoeing teams since 1997. He is passionate about helping people to improve, accelerate their performance and achieve successful outcomes in extremely challenging sporting or business environments.
This passion is underpinned by a long-term experience of coaching, high performance and leadership development in Olympic sport, as well as business and military sectors. Performance Leadership Coaching is John’s edge.
John is an experienced and accredited executive coach, with a strong track record of success in strategic leadership, directing performance, high performance, executive business coaching, and provides support to both public and private sector board level business leaders at MD, CEO and COO level. He has 40 years first-hand practical experience of coaching elite athletes, coaches and support staff, and was team GB’s Performance Director and Team Leader at five Olympic Games; supporting athletes to win 16 Olympic and 5 Paralympic medals including five Gold medals at Rio 2016. He received the Olympic Sport Award of Honour in 2012 and 2016.
John was a Senior Officer in The Royal Air Force, specialising in the management of training at Ministry of Defence level, working across organisational boundaries within the UK and overseas with multi-national defence forces. He was awarded the RAF Sword of Honour for outstanding leadership and made MBE in 1991 for services to the organisation and management of personal development and leadership training in the RAF.
John’s coaching philosophy is person-centred and pragmatic, he places high importance on being authentic and creating rapport and empathy with his clients – building a strong relationship and creating an effective working alliance are significant aspects of his coaching approach. As an executive coach and group facilitator, John brings an open minded, flexible approach and adapts his coaching style and methodology based on the needs of his individual clients and their business contexts to help them unlock their true potential for achieving high performance. Most importantly, he works alongside his clients to support them to widen their perspectives and shift their horizons. In periods of transition, John supports clients to recognise leadership challenges, to successfully overcome them and to develop resilience and adaptability.
