In a career spanning staff jobs at the Economist and more than a decade at TIME magazine, in senior positions including London Bureau Chief, Europe Editor and Editor-at-Large, she has spent more than three decades covering politics, business and the biggest events of our times and interviewed many world-famous figures. Her book, Good Grief: Embracing Life at a Time of Death, features letters from her mother and describes the experience of their widowhood, weeks apart, at the start of the pandemic. Attack of the Fifty Foot Women: How Gender Equality Can Save the World! was published in March 2017 by HarperCollins to critical acclaim. Her biography of Prince Charles, Charles: The Heart of a King (published in February 2015 by Penguin Random House) is a Sunday Times Top 10 bestseller and generated worldwide headlines with its claims of dysfunction in the royal courts. Her 2011 book Amortality: The Pleasures and Perils of Living Agelessly, exploring our changing attitudes to age and ageing, has been translated into many different languages.
The winner of the FPA Story of the Year in 2010 and shortlisted for the Orwell Prize the following year, she has also been named in WIE Women in Excellence 2013, Progress 1000 Evening Standard Equality Champion 2016, Oxford University Suffrage Champion 2018 and in Gender Equality Top 100: Most Influential People in Global Policy 2018.
