First, I really enjoy coaching and it is rewarding to see the impact it has on others. Furthermore, it has impacted how I manage and lead my team and how I work with my partners and stakeholders. I have already recommended the programme to one of my colleagues and she has started the apprenticeship as well.
Were you part of an open or closed cohort? Did you find this type of cohort to be beneficial?
I’m part of an open cohort, with some members from my own business and the majority from other various employers. I’m finding this to be incredibly beneficial as we all have completely unique perspectives and ways of working. It’s been great to see us all come together as a unit to support, empower, and push each other to achieve our goals.
What were the reasons that made you want to attend the programme? What challenges did you face prior to attending the programme?
I became a new Team Leader in March 2021 and knew that whilst I had some transferrable skills, I wanted to expand my knowledge and gain a recognized qualification to back up my skills. The workplace apprenticeship seemed like the perfect opportunity to do this whilst also maintaining my day job. As a full time employee and a mother of two, I couldn’t dedicate extra time at evenings and weekends to complete a qualification. But with support from Raise the Bar and my line manager, I am able to dedicate time in my normal working hours to do this.
How did these challenges impact your performance in your role?
I was doing a lot of work by myself, not delegating enough and not enabling others to come up with ideas and make decisions.

I knew that gaining a recognized qualification would further my career, whilst also increasing my skills, knowledge, and confidence in my abilities.

Do you feel you have gained new/developed existing skills since being on the programme? Please give details.
I’m about half way through the programme and have been focusing on people management. This has been incredibly beneficial, and I have brought lots of tools and techniques back to my team including the Belbin and Tuckman questionnaires to assess where my team is at. The main improvement has been in my confidence – I feel that whilst I’m still a relatively new line manager, I understand how to support my team, provide good feedback and I’m now also starting to mentor newer team leaders in my department!
What do you feel has been the main benefit from attending the programme?
The main benefit from attending the programme so far is without a doubt the confidence I now have in my abilities. I’m not ‘faking it ‘til I make it’ anymore – most of the time I actually know what I’m talking about now, and that’s usually because I’ve attended a workshop, completed research and written an assignment on it!
Has anything changed in your role since attending the programme?
I have had lots of new starters in the team which has involved lots of recruitment and inductions. As we are a new department, we didn’t have any material in place to onboard new staff. I saw this as an opportunity to build on my passion for EDI, ensuring my recruitment attracted a diverse pool of applicants and put together an induction package that can be used by the whole department.

I have already recommended the programme and Raise the Bar to colleagues! Signing up for this qualification is one of the best things I have done in my career to date!

I have completed other leadership courses prior to this course and this course was highlighted to me by my previous line manager who said this would be useful for me.
How did these challenges impact your performance in your role?
These challenges made me overthink and doubt my decision making regarding leadership. As a clinical leader you also have to be expert in both domains. Always making me double check with my peers if I had made the correct decision.

At the beginning of the programme I wanted to increase my confidence and learn more about operational leadership, as in the future I would like to progress my career.

The workshops have been very beneficial. We have completed them all now and the workshop I got the most out of was project management and finance. It is good to collectively discuss issues and work together in the group.

My coach has been absolutely brilliant. He has always been on hand to help if required and to give advice. Most importantly the course and coach have helped me with my self-awareness. Therefore, my confidence and abilities in operational leadership have improved.
Do you feel you have gained new skills or developed existing skills since being on the programme?
The time management skills I learnt really boosted my productivity at work. These helped me to become more organised and structured. I love being organised! Self-awareness has really helped and completing 360 feedback allowed me to gain others’ perspectives. This has been really enlightening in allowing me to grow as a leader. The training has made me a more inclusive and calm leader. Coaching skills have also been beneficial due to the recent emotional battles that the department have been through. My coaching skills have been beneficial to aid supporting the wider team.
How have you been able to use the skills, knowledge and behaviors from the programme in your role?
Time management tools are a necessity and I always believed I was organised, there was however room for improvement and the course taught me this. I have used a lot of the skills and will continue to do so as they are transferrable skills to have in a leadership role.

Did you find the programme beneficial?
Very much so, predominantly because it was flexible and had practical application to my role and the work which I do. Whilst I learned more about theoretical aspects, it was fantastic that I could relate it to my role. It gave me the tools to review Equality and Diversity through a more informed perspective and lens.
Do you feel you have gained new/developed existing skills since being on the programme?
Definitely! As well as considering my work through a more informed and inclusive lens, it was great to collaborate with others and learn about best practices and approaches within other organisations. Writing an assignment as part of my qualification gave me effective time management discipline and the ability to critically analyse in a concise manner.
How have you been able to use the skills and knowledge from the programme in your role?
As the assignment and learning discussions were based on how knowledge could be applied, I have been able to convert this knowledge and new skills into practical actions both within my learning and development role and across the organisation. For example, the new global Inclusion Portal we have recently developed and baking Equality and Diversity into our learning programmes.

I feel it has been instrumental in being part of a working party, set up to review equality, diversity and inclusion in my organisation. What were the reasons that made you want to attend the programme? What challenges did you face prior to attending the programme?
My Personal Development Plan was to apply for a promotion within the same year, this would’ve been my first leadership role with a team of my own and except from clinical management experience, I really didn’t have any background in leading a team. I wanted to complete a leadership course to give myself and my team the best start.
How did these challenges impact your performance in your role?
My performance wasn’t hugely affected prior to joining the programme, however I would lead a team of people based on my own previous experiences with my managers, copying what they did and without any rationale.
How did you feel at the beginning of the programme? What did you want to achieve? What were your expectations/goals?
I felt totally out of my depth having never studied this subject before. I wanted to accrue tools and theories to put into practice with my team and get a better insight into leadership and management.

The workshops are beneficial, and I found that being able to watch the recordings back benefitted me greatly due to my health diagnosis, as I find it hard to take notes as I’m not able to concentrate in the same way most people can.

Lucy is incredible! She really took the time to understand me and how I learn. She was always available when I had questions. Lucy is very organized and is able to explain Bud and what’s expected from you.
Do you feel you have gained new/developed existing skills since being on the programme?
Yes! Coaching tools, project management tools, I’ve also learned so much about myself both personally and professionally. I have a much better understanding of emotional intelligence. I also have a much better understanding of team dynamics – forming, storming, norming and performing! This has helped me to preempt situations in my team that would affect performance.
How have you been able to use the skills, knowledge and behaviors from the programme in your role?
Maintaining team performance, having challenging conversations which I would have shied away from in the past. Managing a project. Organising workload in line with people’s strengths, weaknesses and characters. I’ve been able to coach several team members so that they can deputise for me during periods of annual leave. I’ve also been able to motivate my team and maintain performance.

Would you recommend this programme and Raise the Bar to your colleagues?
Yes – it’s so insightful! I’ve really grown as a person as well as professionally, and you can put your learning into practice so you can see the benefit in real time.
“Claire should be extremely proud of herself for the journey she has been on. I’m so proud of how far she has come. Claire was promoted whilst on the course and even though her workload increased, this didn’t stop her hitting every deadline.
Claire has said the managing and leading people modules came at just the right time to allow her to embed her new skills and knowledge straight away and she is naturally embedding her coaching skills into everyday work. Claire says she has learnt a lot about herself both personally and professionally through the self-awareness piece.
Claire presented a detailed and thorough project to me, and her manager Gemma said “Claire’s Project put us in great position for our transformation and it was implemented across all teams creating significant timesaving – a big improvement across the company”.
Well done Claire!”

Yes, how to frame a difficult conversation, how to promote my own worth, to look at my growth zone, and I use the quote Kirsty always said – “Problems only exist in the absence of the right conversation” – I absolutely love this quote.
How have you been able to use the skills and knowledge from the programme in your role?
I’ve shared a lot of what I’ve learnt with our internal future leaders programme and encouraged employees to sign up for Raise the Bar’s Women in Leadership L3 & L5 Apprenticeship Programmes.
What do you feel has been the main benefit from attending the programme?
Talking to other women in business who are going through similar issues and feel the same as you do, makes you feel better knowing that you’re not the only one thinking, feeling or having the same work issues as you. The breakout sessions were great for this. Hearing from the inspirational women speakers was also a huge benefit, as you don’t usually have access to these ladies to hear their stories and have the opportunity to ask them questions.
Would you recommend this programme?
Yes, definitely – especially if they are lacking in self-confidence and self-worth. I’m also looking to join Raise the Bar’sChange Catalyst programme because of this programme.
What programme are you working towards/have you completed?
I am currently working towards Level 5 Women in Leadership with Raise the Bar. I work as part of an open cohort; I have found this type of cohort beneficial as I get to work with likeminded people who have such varied knowledge and experiences which we can share and learn from as a team. This type of cohort is great as I have found that regardless of the industry, the challenges faced by women in leadership positions are mirrored.
What were the reasons that made you want to attend the programme? What challenges did you face prior to attending the programme?
I chose to enroll on this programme for many reasons; the key ones were to build my confidence as a Senior Female Manager, to understand the different approaches to leadership and the tools and techniques available, which I could adopt to become a stronger leader. Many of the challenges I faced were down to myself. Since enrolling, I have discovered that I do appear to have imposter syndrome and I am now, with the help of my wonderful coach Maureen, learning on how to control this and the positive focuses I can take.
How did these challenges impact your performance in your role?
The challenges are not directly impacting my performance, they do still affect how I reflect on the day, how I feel I am personally feeling and how I celebrate success.
How did you feel at the beginning of the programme? What did you want to achieve?
I was apprehensive before starting the course, having been out of education for several years, however this feeling was dissolved within the first five minutes of the first workshop. Having read through the course content, I was excited about what I was going to learn on my journey and how this could be instantly used in my role of Area Manager.
Did you find the workshops beneficial?
The workshops are brilliant, I have so far attended four which have covered Self Awareness and Leading Others. I find the time with my cohort a great opportunity to discuss and explore each topic and relating back to real life scenarios. The skills, knowledge and behaviours that I have learnt this far on the programme have been instantly transferable to my role and I have already noticed a change in my approach when managing my team. I have found it fascinating that I am unknowingly already using some techniques daily and it is a great moment when you can put a name to a method I am already familiar with.
How did you find the support from your coach throughout the programme?
The support Maureen has provided me with has been invaluable. I tend to overthink situations and no matter what the problem has been, she is always there to help and offer advice. The feedback she gives always gives me areas to focus on and how I can further develop in prepare ahead of my End Point Assessment.
What do you feel has been the main benefit from attending the programme?
My confidence and abilities are growing month on month; the course is really encouraging me to try new approaches and change the existing way I am working to be inclusive of different learning styles. This has been noticed by my team which is incredibly rewarding.
Would you recommend this programme?
I would recommend both this programme and Raise the Bar to anyone who wants to develop themselves or make a change to their own journey. The support, training assets and workshops are brilliant and instantly transferable to any career.
What were the reasons that made you want to attend the programme? What challenges did you face prior to attending the programme?
To learn more about ED&I and share the knowledge and awareness with my colleagues. Sometimes challenging when thinking of examples as my current job role is in Pay and Benefits so not my direct focus.
How did you feel at the beginning of the programme? What did you want to achieve? What were your expectations/goals?
Thought it was a great opportunity to learn in a relaxed environment, the group size was the right size to feel comfortable enough to speak and for there to be adequate input from all, creating great discussions.
Did you find the programme beneficial?
Yes, absolutely. Whilst I work in Pay & Benefits, I am actually aspiring to be a HR Business Partner so this has really widened my knowledge and insights into how to address certain situations with a greater amount of care, than I initially probably would’ve done too. It’s also been good to share some examples with my local team of 6 colleagues who haven’t attended the course.
Do you feel you have gained new/developed existing skills since being on the programme?
Yes, definitely. It’s made me think about the language and tone I use especially when having an awkward conversation. Without realizing it before, conscious bias traits could roll off the tongue (for some colleagues too), so it’s been great for awareness above all. Whilst I would always strive to help/assist a colleague with their query, I may’ve neglected the fact the language, tone or words used could be delivered in a contrary way having an adverse effect.
How have you been able to use the skills and knowledge from the programme in your role?
When dealing with queries; both verbal and written communications.
What do you feel has been the main benefit from attending the programme?
How others feel, putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.
Would you recommend this programme/Raise the Bar to your colleagues?
Yes, most definitely. Our Trainer Steve was brilliant.
What programme are you working towards/have you completed?
I’m working towards the Level 3 Excelling in Team Leadership qualification. I was in a closed cohort with my organisation, but I wanted to engage with people from different organisations, so I moved into an open cohort. I found this to be very beneficial, as I’ve been able to learn new ways of working and hear other people’s perspectives.
What were the reasons that made you want to attend the programme? What challenges did you face prior to attending the programme?
Before the programme, I didn’t want to manage people at all. I didn’t like the thought of being responsible for people and all the politics that come with it. When I first took my role, I had a very business-oriented mindset and didn’t focus on managing people at all. My manager gave me a safe space to look at myself and the opportunity to develop myself further. This led to me applying for the course, as I wanted to better myself for the people I work with day-to-day. I had to understand my weaknesses, and learn how to develop others to do the same.
How did these challenges impact your performance in your role?
Patience was a big challenge for me. I needed to learn how to pause, to have that ability to slow down when I’m talking to others and work in a collective manner, as opposed to just reacting to what people say. My time-keeping and prioritising was also an issue which impacted my performance.
How did you feel at the beginning of the programme? What did you want to achieve?
At the beginning of the programme I was eager to learn. I really wanted to be able to understand myself, to be able to understand others and have the theories and behind that so it can support my practise as opposed to just making it up along the way.
Did you find the workshops beneficial?
I’m quite heavily into theories. I really like the understanding behind the workshops. I don’t like learning methods without principles, so the workshops were great to learn how to theorise and develop your own methods from your learnings and tailor them to your own organisation and people.
How did you find the support from your coach throughout the programme?
My coach Simon has been meeting me bi-weekly and every other meeting is with my manager. In these meetings we will go through my coursework and discuss my progress, and he’s always available when I have a question or need live feedback. Simon has also given me so much additional support. I didn’t have my English and Maths qualifications when starting this course. There was a time at the beginning of the course, I had my head in the sand and didn’t think I needed to do it. “It’s fine, I know English and Maths, I just didn’t get the GCSE to resolve that” I thought. Simon took his time with me and managed to support me with Nicola. In addition to taking this course, I also was doing one-to-one English and Maths sessions with Simon, as well as self-learning. Simon provided me with links to be able to download and buy functional skills level English and Maths resources, as well as spending time with me during the meetings to discuss everything.
Do you feel you have gained new skills or developed existing skills since being on the programme?
Since being on the programme I’ve learnt how to delegate, being able to know what doesn’t need my attention, what benefits I’m offering with my service, how I’m supporting my team and how to push that other people to learn as well.
How have you been able to use the skills, knowledge and behaviours from the programme in your role?
My learning and skills developed from this programme has inspired more of a change in culture within our team and we’re now a high performing team and people are always stepping up to new roles and taking on new responsibilities.
What do you feel has been the main benefit from attending the programme?
A big benefit of the programme has been that I now enjoy managing people. I went from being all about the business analytics side and going to other managers for the people side of things, to now being the people person that really enjoys it, and I’ve been given opportunities to support another manager towards achieving the same.
Has anything changed in your role since attending the programme?
I was promoted to Level 2 as a manager since starting the programme. In addition to that, I’ve been able to support a second manager to understand themselves and others and work better, being able to work with the local authority and now also additionally getting further responsibility by being given a second team to manage. So there’s been a vast amount of structural changes, but I feel like it’s just getting easier every month. The more responsibility I get, the more the culture is instilled from the learning I’ve had from the programme and Raise the Bar.
I love my learning, so once I’ve completed the course, I’d like to look at learning within my organisation internally, and look towards being trained to be an Operations Manager and take on the Level 5 Operational Management course that Raise the Bar offer, to try to upskill myself further.
Would you recommend this programme?
Heavily. I have recommended the programme to one of my colleagues already. It’s so worth it. I’m loving every second of it.
What programme are you working towards?
Women in Leadership Level 5
What were the reasons that made you want to attend the programme? What challenges did you face prior to attending the programme?
I thought attending the programme would be a great opportunity to develop new leadership skills and consolidate existing ones through both theoretical study and practical application. I wanted to learn and develop key leadership skills to progress within the business but most importantly become a more confident, respected and authentic leader.
The fact this programme is tailored towards women felt like a real bonus, with topics such as imposter syndrome being of interest as this is something I find a challenge. The chance to get to know and learn with different female colleagues from across the business was also appealing.
Before attending the programme, I’ve struggled with self-doubt, lack of confidence and making my voice heard. I’ve also found it difficult to make the time for my own development; it being something I’d always de-prioritise or run out of energy to do on a regular basis.
How did these challenges impact your performance in your role?
They were limiting my own development because I would tend to shy away situations that would put me outside of my comfort zone and that I didn’t feel confident in. They were also causing a level of anxiety because I would over analyze what I’d said and my actions, making me question myself and my contribution plus being overly self-critical. I struggled to assert myself in situations with different personalities and working styles.
How did you feel at the beginning of the programme? What did you want to achieve?
I was excited by the opportunity – to have the time for myself to learn, work and support my peers and to develop and grow my skillset. I also felt a little overwhelmed by the commitment and had a few worries I might be taking too much on and overcommitting myself. I wanted to become a more confident, respected and authentic leader whilst doing the best I could do.
Did you find the workshops beneficial?
The workshops were extremely beneficial. The trainers were excellent and did a great job balancing more formal content delivery with learning through discussion. On other training courses I’ve never really enjoyed the breakout sessions, but on this programme they probably were of most value. Once the cohort of ladies got to know one another, we were able to create a really safe and supportive space in which to discuss our thoughts, challenges and experiences. It was invaluable hearing from the other ladies and drawing on their wealth of experience. It felt nice knowing ‘it’s not just me’ as we gave honest accounts of ourselves.
How did you find the support from your coach throughout the programme?
Excellent! I hold Karen in the highest regard; she’s approachable, a great listener and a cheerleader. I always really enjoy our time together and come away with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
Do you feel you have gained new skills or developed existing skills since being on the programme?
Since being on the programme I’ve both gained new skills and consolidated existing ones.
I’m naturally an organised person that likes to plan and manage my time accordingly, however the time management element of the course was extremely useful. It helped me on a couple of levels: it gave me permission to make the time in my diary for myself. I have become more selfish with my time and more disciplined attending or not attending meetings based on what would give me the most value. The Eisenhower matrix is one tool I’ve found incredibly helpful, especially to prioritise my time and workload. I also understand / recognize when my energy levels are highest / I’m least distracted and plan my workload and diary accordingly.
I’m much better at reflecting constructively on a situation so I learn and refine my future approach. Thinking about what I’ve learnt, what went well, what didn’t go well and what I’d do differently next time.
How have you been able to use the skills, knowledge and behaviors from the programme in your role?
Within my role I manage several projects at any one time. I’ve been able to use what I’ve learnt on the programme to manage my stakeholder relationships more effectively by considering the stakeholders importance/power and what they’re interested in. I’ve developed my communication skills to make it impactful, timely, relevant, and delivered in the right medium.
I’ve had the chance to manage; I now understand the importance of communicating a vision and building a coalition of those bought-in, making sufficient time for planning, assessing risk and mitigation, thinking about individual reactions, potential barriers to change and how to overcome them plus the importance of celebrating wins/milestones.
I’ve developed a more individual approach to managing the team; thinking about different working styles, what is important to them, what they are motivated by and how to get the best out of them.
My communication has become more rounded; I still favour digital methods, but now ensure I don’t overuse them and instead pick up the phone. I try to ensure non-verbal comms are assertive, my language is unapologetic and have learnt to embrace silences. I think Kirsty Mac’s 5 squares of communication is a great mental checklist: (1) right time (2) right place (3) right agenda (4) right method (5) right person.
What do you feel has been the main benefit from attending the programme?
Growth in my confidence has really been the main benefit and the opportunities this has presented. Rather than shying away from situations I’ve jumped right in! One example that I’m really proud of is that I’ve become a mentor in a Girls in Tech programme. This programme, developed with the Fulwood Academy, has been created to encourage girls in Year 10 to consider careers in tech roles, but more importantly, give them experiences and exposure to people and situations they wouldn’t ordinarily be able to access.
Would you recommend this programme?
Absolutely, I feel it’s really been worthwhile. I feel like I’ve got a much more rounded skill set in which to lead the team and better equipped to support and guide them in their roles.
Were you part of an open or closed cohort? Did you find this type of cohort to be beneficial?
I am part of an open cohort, I have found this type of cohort to be very beneficial as there is a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences, and skill sets within the group. It has been interesting to learn how different businesses work outside of the Civil Service.
What were the reasons that made you want to attend the programme? What challenges did you face prior to attending the programme?
I first heard about Apprenticeships during National Apprenticeship week. I later attended a session related to the Women in Leadership programme which was held on International Women’s Day. I was immediately inspired by what the programme entailed, what it could offer and how it would enable me to develop my leadership skills, which would help me progress to the next stage in my career. Over the years I have personally struggled with self-confidence, self-belief and feeling unable to articulate my thoughts and opinions clearly. I have often felt my voice was not heard.
How did these challenges impact your performance in your role?
I would often shy away in situations when asked to contribute my views in front of a room of people or volunteer to take the lead on something which may be out of my comfort zone. Instead of making a decision and sticking by it, I would allow the opinions of others to influence that decision.
How did you feel at the beginning of the programme? What did you want to achieve? What were your expectations/goals?
At the beginning of the apprenticeship, I was unsure of what to expect and felt out of my depth, as it has been several years since I have done any form of study. I was worried about having to juggle the programme with full-time work and having the responsibility of two young children. I wanted to gain more confidence in myself and get out of my comfort zone, whilst rising to the challenge. I was interested in learning about the theory, the tools, and techniques I need to move into a leadership role, as I lack the management experience and thought this would be a great start.
Did you find the workshops beneficial?
The workshops were great! It has been interesting to meet other women on the same journey as me and share ideas and experiences and hear different viewpoints. Having the opportunity to have open and honest conversations via the breakout sessions and the experience of learning from each other has been invaluable. I always look forward to the workshops as it is a day for me to focus on myself by reflecting, planning, and working towards my own goals and aspirations.
How did you find the support from your coach throughout the programme?
My coach, Karen, is fantastic and has been extremely supportive and encouraging from the very start of my journey. She is approachable and understanding, and has helped guide me through my assignments, at times helping me understand what the ask is and ensuring I capture the key points. I have learnt so much from the feedback she has provided in relation to my assignments, and this itself has motivated me to improve each time I make a submission.
Do you feel you have gained new skills or developed existing skills since being on the programme?
I have now attended all the workshops on the programme and am now focusing on completing the remaining assignments. This is where I can reflect on all the previous learning and bring it together. I have started using the tools and techniques daily and it has become second nature to me.
How have you been able to use the skills, knowledge, and behaviors from the programme in your role?
That is the beauty of the way the apprenticeship is set out, from the very first workshop you can apply your learning to your role. I have discovered so much about myself from attending the ‘Self Awareness’ and ‘Time Management’ sessions. The knowledge I have picked up has also been shared with my team who have now started to utilise the tools within their own roles.
What do you feel has been the main benefit from attending the programme?
I feel I have gained more confidence, self-belief and self-awareness which in turn has enabled me to raise my own profile by displaying my skills and abilities within my team and the directorate. I am more equipped to deal with situations with a positive outlook and make effective decisions. We have a new starter who is due to join our team. I will use this opportunity share all the knowledge that I have picked up from my workshops to coach/mentor her during her first few months.
Has anything changed in your role since attending the programme?
I now look forward to taking on variety of tasks which I have no experience in. The programme has provided me with confidence and motivated me to lead on tasks. I now view every opportunity as a chance to enhance my skills.
Would you recommend this programme to your colleagues?
Absolutely, I recommend this apprenticeship programme to anyone who is looking to develop their skills. If you are looking to develop yourself, expand your knowledge and interested in career progression, this opportunity is a fantastic way to do it.
